We’ve gotten very good at sounding like justice.

We preach a sermon that shakes the rafters. We quote the prophets, name systems, and call out empire. We organize a vigil, craft a statement, post the graphic, and say all the right things.

And yet—too often—we’re still whispering when it comes to power.

We’re bold in the pulpit, but absent from policy. We’re fluent in liberation language, but disconnected from legislative strategy. We’re reacting to injustice instead of shaping the systems that produce it.

Let’s just tell the truth: somewhere along the way, too many of us were taught that being pastoral meant staying “above” politics—when in reality, it has left us beneath the decisions that are shaping our communities every single day.

That ends here.

From Commentary to Consequence

Politically Pastoral is entering a new season—not as a space for reflection alone, but as a formation hub for faith leaders and organizers who are ready to move from commentary to consequence.

Because faith that doesn’t shape policy is just commentary.

This newsletter exists for those of us who are done choosing between being pastoral and being political—because we know that, at their best, they are the same calling.

Here’s what that means in practice:

  • Sharp political analysis that actually matters for your ministry, your organizing, and your people—not cable news noise, but what’s happening underneath the headlines.

  • Theologically grounded insight that doesn’t dilute justice, but deepens it—rooted in the sacred worth of our communities and the demand for liberation.

  • Actionable strategies you can use immediately—sermon frameworks, advocacy talking points, organizing pathways, and policy interventions that move the needle.

This is not a think-piece newsletter.This is a toolkit.

Let’s Be Honest About the Gap

If you’re reading this, you probably already feel it.

You’re preaching liberation—but side-eyeing city council agendas because you’re not sure how to engage them. You’re organizing in the streets—but struggling to translate that energy into policy wins. You’re following elections and legislation—but wishing you had language that connects it all back to your faith in a way that actually mobilizes people.

You’ve been told to “stay in your lane,” when the truth is your calling has always been bigger than that.

And if you’re really honest? You’re tired.

Tired of watching harmful policies pass while the church debates semantics.Tired of reaction without strategy.Tired of knowing what’s wrong—and not always having the tools to intervene in a way that creates measurable change.

If that’s you, you’re not behind. You’re being invited into your next level of leadership.

What This Will Look Like

Going forward, each issue of Politically Pastoral will be structured to do three things: inform you, ground you, and move you.

1. What’s HappeningA clear, no-nonsense breakdown of a key political issue, policy debate, or power shift—what it is, who it impacts, and what’s actually at stake.

2. Why It Matters TheologicallyNot vague spirituality, but real theological engagement—how our faith traditions call us to respond, resist, or reimagine.

3. What You Can Do This WeekConcrete action steps you can take immediately—whether that’s shaping a sermon, contacting a policymaker, organizing your community, or shifting a local conversation.

Because information without action is just another form of paralysis.

This Is a Call-In, Not Just a Call-Out

This space isn’t about shaming faith leaders. It’s about equipping us.

We don’t need more guilt—we need better tools. We don’t need more noise—we need clearer strategy. We don’t need more distance from politics—we need deeper engagement with it.

The truth is, our communities don’t have the luxury of waiting for us to figure this out slowly.

Policy is being written right now.Budgets are being decided right now.Lives are being shaped—affirmed or denied—right now.

And whether we show up or not, those decisions will still be made.

So the question isn’t whether we’ll be political.

The question is whether we’ll be effective.

Don’t Just Read—Organize

If this resonates with you, don’t keep it to yourself.

  • Share this with a colleague who’s been trying to bridge faith and policy but hasn’t had the language or support

  • Bring this framework into your next sermon, meeting, or strategy session

  • And hit reply—tell me what issue is keeping you up at night right now

Because this isn’t just a newsletter. It’s the beginning of a more coordinated, more courageous, and more strategic approach to justice-rooted leadership.

We’re not here to observe power.

We’re here to shape it.

Because faith that doesn’t shape policy is just commentary.
