As we enter the sacred space of Holy Week and look toward the promise of Easter, we do so not with passive reverence but with a deep and urgent call to action. The resurrection is not just an ancient miracle but a present-day mandate.

In the face of renewed cruelty from the Trump administration, targeting immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and the very heart of our democratic institutions, Easter reminds us that the empire never has the final word.

This week’s Politically Pastoral issue—“Resurrecting Justice: Easter as a Call to Organize”—invites us to see Jesus not just as a savior but as a liberator who stood against empire, refused silence, and chose solidarity with the oppressed.

His resurrection is our rallying cry to rise with courage, confront injustice, and organize boldly in love. Let us move from the tomb of despair into the light of resistance, faith, and collective power. Christ is risen—and so must we rise.

Week of Escalating Injustice

As Holy Week draws to a close, the Trump administration has intensified its assaults on marginalized communities and democratic institutions. This week’s developments underscore the urgent need for collective resistance:

  • Deportation of Palestinian Activist: Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful U.S. resident and Palestinian organizer, faces deportation based solely on his political beliefs. A federal judge ruled that his views conflict with U.S. foreign policy interests, setting a dangerous precedent for free speech rights.

  • Immigration Enforcement in Houses of Worship: A federal judge upheld the Trump administration's decision to allow immigration enforcement operations in religious spaces, overturning a 30-year precedent that protected such sanctuaries.

  • Crackdown on Pro-Palestinian Activists: Under the guise of combating antisemitism, the administration has initiated arrests and deportations of pro-Palestinian protesters, aligning with "Project Esther," a plan that redefines criticism of Israel as antisemitism and targets activists for punitive measures.

  • Targeting Transgender Rights: The administration continues its campaign against transgender individuals, threatening to withhold federal funding from educational programs that allow transgender girls to participate in girls' sports. Maine's refusal to comply has suspended funds for essential programs, including school meal initiatives.

  • Assault on Civil Rights Commission: President Trump is attempting to take control of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by replacing the current Democratic chair with a conservative Republican, potentially reshaping the commission’s focus and undermining longstanding civil rights protections.

  • Suppression of Civil Society: The administration targets lawyers and non-profits that hold the government accountable, threatening democracy and instilling fear among civil society organizations. The Guardian

The Empire Strikes Back

This Holy Week, as we reflect on the passion and resurrection of Jesus, we witness a modern-day empire flexing its power to suppress dissent and marginalize vulnerable communities. The Trump administration's actions mirror the oppressive tactics of ancient Rome, targeting those who dare to challenge its authority.

The deportation of Mahmoud Khalil for his political beliefs is reminiscent of the Roman Empire's persecution of early Christians who opposed imperial policies. The administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian activists under "Project Esther" weaponizes antisemitism to silence legitimate criticism, undermining both free speech and genuine efforts to combat hatred.

By allowing immigration enforcement in houses of worship, the administration desecrates sacred spaces that have historically served as sanctuaries for the oppressed. This move not only violates religious freedoms but also instills fear among immigrant communities seeking refuge.

The targeting of transgender individuals, particularly in educational settings, reflects a broader agenda to erase the identities and rights of marginalized groups. Maine's resistance to these policies highlights the importance of state-level advocacy in the face of federal overreach.

President Trump's attempt to seize control of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights threatens to dismantle decades of progress in civil rights protections. By installing a conservative chair, the administration aims to redirect the commission's focus away from addressing systemic injustices.

The suppression of civil society organizations further erodes democratic institutions as the administration seeks to silence those who hold it accountable. This authoritarian approach undermines the very foundations of a free and just society.

Jesus as Liberator

As we approach Easter Sunday, we are reminded of Jesus's role as a liberator who challenged the oppressive structures of his time. His ministry was a direct confrontation with the Roman Empire and the religious authorities complicit in maintaining the status quo.

Jesus' actions—healing the sick, dining with outcasts, and preaching the Kingdom of God—were radical acts of resistance against an empire that devalued human life. His crucifixion was a political execution, intended to silence a movement that threatened imperial power.

The resurrection of Jesus is not merely a spiritual victory but a profound political statement. It signifies the triumph of life over death, justice over oppression, and hope over despair. As theologian Jon Sobrino writes, "Jesus was Messiah, the anointed one, but he was also liberator—offering us liberation from physical, mental, spiritual, and social constrictions—freeing us for love, justice, and courage."

In our current context, we are called to embody the liberative spirit of Jesus by standing in solidarity with the marginalized, challenging unjust systems, and working toward a society that reflects God's inclusive love.

Call to Action: Faithful Resistance

In light of the ongoing assaults on justice and democracy, we must respond with faithful resistance rooted in love, compassion, and unwavering commitment to equity. Here are tangible steps you can take:

  1. Support Legal Defense Funds: Contribute to organizations providing legal assistance to those targeted by the administration's policies, such as the ACLU and the National Immigration Law Center.

  2. Advocate for Transgender Rights: Contact your state and federal representatives to oppose policies that discriminate against transgender individuals. Support local LGBTQ+ organizations working to protect and uplift trans communities.

  3. Protect Sacred Spaces: Collaborate with faith communities to ensure houses of worship remain sanctuaries for those in need. Advocate for policies that uphold the sanctity and safety of religious spaces.

  4. Defend Civil Society: Stand with non-profits and legal organizations facing suppression. Amplify their work, volunteer your time, and donate resources to sustain their efforts in promoting justice.

  5. Educate and Mobilize: Host community forums and educational events to raise awareness about the administration's actions. Encourage civic engagement and collective action to safeguard democratic institutions.

  6. Participate in Peaceful Protests: Join demonstrations and movements advocating for justice, such as the ongoing "Hands Off" protests. Your presence amplifies the collective voice demanding change.

  7. Engage in Spiritual Practices: Ground your activism in spiritual disciplines that sustain and nourish your commitment to justice. Prayer, meditation, and communal worship can fortify your resolve.

Go out and be an angelic troublemaker!
